For unemployed youth in uMngeni Local Municipality, opportunities that offer real skills — not just promises — don’t come often. This one matters because it’s practical, local, and time sensitive.

uMngeni Local Municipality has opened applications for Skills Development Opportunities in Plant Production and Poultry Production (NQF Level 2). The programme targets young people who are already involved in agriculture or want to build a serious foundation in farming. Applications close on 16 January 2026, and submissions must be made in person.

Why uMngeni Opens uMngeni skills development programme Matters Right Now

Across rural and semi-rural areas, many young people are active in agriculture informally — growing vegetables, keeping chickens, or helping family farming projects — but lack recognised training.

This programme responds directly to that gap. It focuses on hands-on agricultural skills, basic production planning, and workplace readiness, rather than classroom theory alone. While it does not offer a stipend, it provides something often more valuable in the long term: certified, practical skills aligned with South Africa’s National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

For youth planning to pursue further agricultural training, cooperatives, or funded programmes, this certificate can strengthen future applications.

Understanding the NQF Level 2 National Certificate

An NQF Level 2 National Certificate is an entry-level qualification, but it is far from meaningless. It is designed to build competence through practical learning.

In agriculture, this level introduces participants to:

  • Safe and responsible farming practices
  • Basic production planning
  • Crop or livestock management fundamentals
  • Workplace discipline and readiness

For many learners, NQF Level 2 becomes a stepping stone to higher qualifications, SETA-funded learnerships, or small-scale agri-business projects.

  • Basic crop cultivation
  • Soil preparation and maintenance
  • Plant health and care
  • Small-scale and subsistence farming practices

It is particularly relevant for those involved in home gardens, community food projects, or small farming plots.

Poultry Production (NQF Level 2)

This stream focuses on entry-level poultry farming skills, including:

  • Poultry care and handling
  • Feeding and basic nutrition
  • Hygiene and disease prevention
  • Foundations of poultry business practices

This option is ideal for youth interested in chicken farming, egg production, or future agri-business ventures.
